Because I am a Girl: The State of the World's Girls 2007
Plan International

'Because I am a Girl: The State of the World's Girls', highlights the appalling situation in which girls find themselves - sometimes through poverty, sometimes because they are young but often simply because of their gender.
The report is the first in a series of global reports on girls to be published over the next nine years by Plan. Timed to be released on the United Nation's International Day of the Family, 'Because I am a Girl' raises awareness of the threats and broken promises that blight the lives of millions of girls.

"Crossing the Red Line"
Kar, Mehrangiz. "Crossing the Red Line: The Struggle for Human Rights in Iran"
2007
ISBN: 156859 1926

This is a remarkable book.It chronicles the life of a woman in Iran- a leading feminist activist and human rights lawyer-under the monarchical and Islamic regimes. From such unique perspective, Mehrangiz Kar ties together micro and macro histories to provide a feminist, intellectual, and political portrait of Iran during the 1960s and after. The volume deserves to be read by both generalists and specialists on Islamic law and revolutionary change in Iran.
This book occupies a special place in the study of Iran and human rights. It is engaging because it tells the story from the perspective of a lawyer involved in the details of her work. It provides a deep insight into the historical processes of social change, demonstrating the current problems of an uneven world.

Encyclopedia of Domestic Violence
Jackson, Nicky Ali (Ed.) "Encyclopedia of Domestic Violence."
Routledge, Febuary 2007
ISBN: 978 0415 969 680
704 pages. $160.00

The Encyclopedia of Domestic Violence is a modern reference from the leading international scholars in domestic violence research. This ground-breaking project has created the first ever publication of an encyclopedia of domestic violence. The primary goal of the Encyclopedia is to provide information on a variety of traditional, as well as breakthrough, issues in this complex phenomenon.
The coverage of the Encyclopedia is broad and diverse, encompassing the entire life span from infancy to old age. The entries include the traditional research areas, such as battered women, child abuse and dating violence. However, this Encyclopedia is unique in that it includes many under-studied areas of domestic violence, such as ritual abuse-torture within families, domestic violence against women with disabilities, pseudo-family violence and domestic violence within military families. It is also unique in that it examines cross-cultural perspectives of domestic violence.

Feminisms in Development
Andrea Cornwall, Elizabeth Harrison and Ann Whitehead (eds). "Feminisms in Development: Contradictions, Contestations and Challenges"
272 pages
2007
ISBN 1 84277 819 6

This collection of essays by leading feminist thinkers from North and South constitutes a major new attempt to reposition feminism within development
studies. Feminism's emphasis on social transformation makes it fundamental to development studies. Yet the relationship between the two disciplines has
frequently been a troubled one. At present, the way in which many development institutions function often undermines feminist intent through bureaucratic structures and unequal power quotients. Moreover, the seeming intractability of inequalities and injustice in developing countries have presented feminists with some enormous challenges. Here, emphasizing the importance of a plurality of approaches, the authors argue for the importance of what 'feminisms' have to say to development. Confronting the enormous challenges for feminisms in development studies, this book provides real hope for dialogue and exchange between feminisms and development.

Gender & Development Journal - Oxfam: Gender-Based Violence Issue
Gender & Development Journal
Oxfam
Volume 15, No.1
2007

The new issue of Oxfam's gender mainstreaming journal 'Gender & Development' (G&D), is out now.
Gender-based violence against women and girls is now firmly recognised as both a development and a human rights issue (although the same can not be said for violence directed at other groups on the basis of their gender identity). There is less tolerance for arguments that such violence is a 'private' or a 'cultural' matter and the legislative framework to protect women and girls from specific forms of gender-based violence is now quite extensive, at both the national and international levels. Articles in this issue of the journal describe successful intervention programmes in very different settings, and show that that the attitudes and beliefs that support and justify gender-based violence against women can and are being challenged at every level of society, and that these attitudes can be changed.
Abstracts of articles appearing in the issue can be found at [

Iran Awakening

Ebadi, Shirin and Azadeh Moaveni. "Iran Awakening: One Woman's Journey to Reclaim Her Life and Country"
Random House Publishing Group
April 2007
ISBN: 0812975286

The moving, inspiring memoir of one of the great women of our times, Shirin Ebadi, winner of the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize and advocate for the oppressed, whose spirit has remained strong in the face of political persecution and despite the challenges she has faced raising a family while pursuing her work.
Best known in this country as the lawyer working tirelessly on behalf of Canadian photojournalist, Zara Kazemi - raped, tortured and murdered in Iran - Dr. Ebadi offers us a vivid picture of the struggles of one woman against the system. The book movingly chronicles her childhood in a loving, untraditional family, her upbringing before the Revolution in 1979 that toppled the Shah, her marriage and her religious faith, as well as her life as a mother and lawyer battling an oppressive regime in the courts while bringing up her girls at home.
Outspoken, controversial, Shirin Ebadi is one of the most fascinating women today. She rose quickly to become the first female judge in the country; but when the religious authorities declared women unfit to serve as judges she was demoted to clerk in the courtroom she had once presided over. She eventually fought her way back as a human rights lawyer, defending women and children in politically charged cases that most lawyers were afraid to represent. She has been arrested and been the target of assassination, but through it all has spoken out with quiet bravery on behalf of the victims of injustice and discrimination and become a powerful voice for change, almost universally embraced as a hero.

Iraqi Women
Al-Ali, Nadje Sadig. "Iraqi Women: Untold Stories from 1948 to the Present"
March 2007

The war in Iraq has put the condition of Iraqi women firmly on the global agenda. For years, their lives have been framed by state oppression, economic sanctions and three wars. Now they must play a seminal role in reshaping their country's future for the twenty-first century.
Nadje Al-Ali challenges the myths and misconceptions which have dominated debates about Iraqi women, bringing a much needed gender perspective to bear on the central political issue of our time. She traces the political history of Iraq from post-colonial independence, to the emergence of a women's movement in the 1950s and Saddam Hussein's early policy of state feminism. The book also discusses the increases in social conservatism, domestic violence and prostitution, and shows that, far from being passive victims, Iraqi women have been, and continue to be, key political actors. Following the invasion and occupation, al-Ali analyses the impact of Islam on women's lives and argues that US-led calls for liberation may in the long term serve to oppress the women of Iraq further.

One Perfect Day

Mead, Rebecca. "One Perfect Day: The Selling of the American Wedding"
Penguin Press HC
May 2007
ISBN: 1594200882
256 pages

Rebecca Mead hopes her audience will respond to her book, "One Perfect Day: The Selling of the American Wedding" the way she did to the wedding industry -- with a mixture of amusement and horror.
Marketing is replacing organized religion and extended family in people's lives, Mead writes, and as wedding ceremonies become more and more elaborate, there is plenty of humor -- and plenty to turn your stomach -- in the business of pledging undying love. This is the first book for Mead, a staff writer for the New Yorker, who has written about everything from human egg-trading for infertile women to the Christian diet movement. Whether her subject is childbearing, religion or love, Mead gravitates toward the same theme in her work: people making money off things that seem like they should be outside of the commercial sphere. Mead writes about how professionals in the wedding industry play on the fears and insecurities of the bride, pressuring her to make the day perfect. She cites an article from Vows, a magazine for wedding dress retailers, which reminds readers, "Just when the bride thinks she'll have to spend no more, it's your job to remind her that her bridal image looks incomplete." Wedding dress retailers are advised to capitalize on what is called the "Oh, Mommy" moment -- when the bride falls in love with a dress -- and pressure them to buy it immediately, regardless of the cost. And videographers appeal to a bride's emotions by telling her that her wedding day will literally be "lost" if she doesn't preserve it on videotape.

Relationships for Aid
Rosalind Eyben (ed)
188 pages
2006
ISBN 1 84407 280 0

International aid is about much more than money. The UN Millennium Development Goals and major events like Live 8 have focused the world spotlight on issues of poverty relief and aid like never before but have not focused on the quality of relationships that can make aid succeed or fail.
This book, authored by an internationally renowned group of aid practitioners reveals the contradictions and challenges. International development organisations combine the unbridled play of power and arrogant amnesia with serious and innovative efforts to create a more democratic world, to support transformative learning and to strengthen
accountability. The book explores recent attempts from within aid agencies to go against the current flow of top-down results based management by learning how to build lasting partnerships that transfer power to those at the receiving end of aid. More than just a critique, the authors offer a practical framework for understanding relationships in the international aid system and look at the relevance of organizational learning theory that is widely used in business.
Rosalind Eyben is a social scientist with a life-time career in international development policy and practice including in Africa, India and most recently in Latin America. She was Chief Social Development Adviser at the UK Department for International Development and since 2002 has been a Fellow at the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex.

Towards the Rise of Women in the Arab World
Arab Human Development Report 2005
335 pages

The rise of women in Arab countries goes beyond redressing historical injustices against them and ensuring their equitable treatment - notwithstanding that both are due obligations for Arab societies. Indeed, the advancement of women is a pre-requisite for a comprehensive Arab renaissance. Societal reform aimed at enabling the rise of women, in line with the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), is envisioned as one of the two wings of the bird symbolising the rise of women in the Arab world. A bird, however, needs two wings to fly. The other wing would be a wide-ranging and effective movement in Arab civil society that engages both women and their male supporters in steadily extending and consolidating targeted societal reform initiatives on the one hand, and on the other, empowering women - and the society at large - to benefit from them. In particular, the report calls for the adoption of time-bound affirmative action, tailored to the specificities of each Arab society, in order to expand the participation of women in all fields of human activity. This is considered imperative to dismantle the structures of centuries of discrimination.

UN Reform: What's In It For Women?
Heinrich Boell Foundation and International Women's Tribune Centre.
93 pages
2006

Abstract from the introduction:
The magnitude and complexity of the issues that touch on the broad range of socio-political and economic aspects of global governance and the elaborate international infrastructure involved make UN reform no easy feat. But since many of us believe that it is still the only international body we have that will put women’s human rights and gender equality on the global map, we need to do our part in re-establishing its legitimacy, in holding Member States accountable to all the international agreements they have signed and in monitoring and demanding coherence between global policies and what the UN does on the ground. At time when the UN is undergoing the most extensive and ambitious reform process by far, we need to stay engaged; we need to be in the middle of the discourse. This publication is an effort to broker and sustain women’s discussion on UN Reform.
